OTHER POETIC TERMS/DEVICES:

 

alliteration: repetition of the initial consonant sound

assonance: repetition of vowel sound

couplet: two-line stanza

foot: a unit of meter containing a combination of stressed and unstressed syllables

iambic pentameter: a line of poetry containing 5 feet, each made up of an unstressed then a stressed syllable

imagery: words or phrases that create vivid sensory experiences for the reader

internal rhyme: rhyme that occurs within a single line of poetry

meter: the reoccurrence of rhythmic pattern

octave: eight-line stanza

quatrain: four-line stanza

refrain: one or more words repeated regularly in a poem, usually at the end of a stanza

repetition: the reappearance of a word, phrase, stanza, or structure in a work used for emphasis

rhyme scheme: the pattern in which rhyme sounds occur in a stanza, which are represented with letters

rhythm: the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry

sestet: six-line stanza

stanza: a group of poetic lines that functions like a paragraph, and is also known as a verse
